F is for Fimo!

For anyone who hasn't heard of Fimo, it's esentially a modelling clay. I recently rediscovered it's existence through my purchase of the fruit pieces featured in my 'A' post. I say 'rediscovered' because I had some of this awesome stuff as a child, sent over by my aunty from the USA, before it was widely available in the UK.

I still have a couple of the things I made way back when. Although, I suspect my mum had a lot of involvement in the little dinosaur as it looks a bit too perfect for something I could have made as a young girl (or perhaps I'm just not giving myself enough credit)!

Anyway, back to the present day...inspired by my fruity purchase from the wonderful Always Alternative (who make a great range of alternative jewellery and polymer clay figurines), I had been toying with the idea of ordering some Fimo for myself. After telling my best friend all about it, she ended up getting me some for my birthday, and now I can't wait to get sculpting!

What would you make out of Fimo? Thanks for visiting :)

  1. I love how you can make different designs just by rolling different colors together (millefiori). I think that is my favorite way to use Fimo.

I have used it to decorate glass candle holders by cutting slices off of a roll and using them to cover up the glass.

I have also seen crochet hooks (the handle part) covered in Fimo. Those are pretty.

    1. I think it might be a while until I can manage milleflori! At least, nothing as tiny as the fruit pieces that I got the other week.

  3. I've never used Fimo, but my mil gave us a book on Fimo techniques. I would love to learn to make miniature food out of Fimo. I will have to check out the Fimo covered crochet hooks that Stefani mentioned. Thanks all--I didn't need a new craft obsession LOL.

    1. I will definitely have to make some fimo crochet hooks, especially as I am taking up crochet too! You're right, all of these craft obsessions can get on top of you...

  4. I love Fimo too. I started much like you, as a little girl making dragons. I love making faeries now. One of my favorite activities I did as a music teacher was making batons from wooden dowels and Fimo. After baking, the students would use their batons to conduct the class.

  5. I learned something here. Never heard of Fimo, so I googled it. It's not expensive and would make a great gift for a small child. But what about clean-up? I wonder if it's a mom's nightmare. Must check further and maybe give to some of the great-grands. Thanks for writing about it. Mary at Mary A to Z

    1. Good question Mary! I don't remember about mess from when I was younger. I imagine it is like any similar substance...I think the potential to get trodden into a carpet might be the thing I would worry most about!! I will have to post again when I have had a chance to make something.
